59th Annual Book Sale

Final Report

This year's booksale was an effort that began last March and ended on September 11, and involved literally hundreds of branch members who planned, cleaned, greeted doners, sorted, and boxed thousands of books, which all had to be lifted, counted, recycled, and (mostly) sold. We are happy to report that the event generated almost $41,000 in gross sales.  After expenses, every dollar will go to scholarships.

The AAUW Used Book Sale is truly a community effort.  Many thanks to:

  • Anthony Pinto, Senior Property Manager of Centro Properties Group, for providing a rent-free donation and sorting site for the 4th year.
  • Borders Books, for donating more than 1,000 free boxes.
  • Sue Schooner and her Girls Group of high school girls who helped at Sunday clean-up as their monthly service project.
  • Members of the Concordia basketball team, who helped move hundreds of heavy boxes of books into the sale site.
  • The staff at Washtenaw Community College, for setting up the sale site and troubleshooting various issues during the sale.
  • Recycle Ann Arbor, for picking up and recycling many worn and damaged books as well as mounds of cardboard and other paper.

Overflow and left over books were taken by various non-profit groups from both the sorting and sale sites. We estimate approximately 550 boxes of books were distributed to non-profit groups this year. Once the sale closed, remaining books were left for WCC students, faculty, and staff.
